The vibracoring option
What kind of sampling is required?  Vibracoring is a good option under these conditions:

-- The sediment depth to sample is greater than 1 ft.  (If less than 1 ft., consider grab sampling ).

-- The sediment depth to sample is greater than 1 ft. but less than 3 ft., and the bottom is very soft; gravity coring is a possibility.

-- Goal is to core to the maximum depth possible (down to 20 ft. or 6 meters) without using underwater drilling.

-- Water depth varies and may exceed 6 ft. (2 meters).

-- Need a continuous intact sediment profile.

-- Need to minimize "rodding" effects common to gravity, push, or hammer cores.

-- Require a larger volume of sediment (2 qt. or liters per ft. of core) for core subsamples.
